ADMISSION PROCESS

Please note that the application period for the
Second Year Student in the Medical Laboratory Technology program is December 1 taken until program is full.
Application forms will ONLY be accepted during this time frame.

The first year course of study for the MLT program is open entry. The only admission requirement is for admission to the college.

Prospective students are required to contact the MLT program coordinator to arrange for academic advising and course placement.

INQUIRY

  1. Inquiry received from prospective student.
  2. Inquiry card completed.
  3. Admission packet given or mailed to applicant.

FORMS

  1. Complete the following forms and return to the MLT program coordinator: Application to MLT: SCCC Application Form Allied Health Application Form Health Record Form Transcript Requests Financial Aid Interview Form Reference Forms (To be returned only by the individual completing the form. References should only be given by immediate supervisors and/or instructors. Essential Functions Consent Form Scholarship Form
  2. MLT program coordinator begins file on applicant with checklist.

ENTRANCE EXAMS

  1. Take the COMPASS Numerical skills test or utilize the enhanced ACT mathematics score to determine math placement. If applicant has taken Intermediate algebra or higher and completed with a grade of C or better, the placement test is waived.
    1. COMPASS Numerical score of 30 or below: take the appropriate developmental math class, using math placement schedule. Admission to the program will be contingent on successful completion (a grade of "C" or above) of the appropriate course before enrollment into the program.
    2. If using the Enhanced ACT mathematics score, refer to the math placement schedule (progressing through a minimum of Intermediate Algebra).
  2. Take the COMPASS Writing and Reading tests to determine English placement. If applicant has taken English Composition I, Public Speaking, General Psychology, and completed with a grade of C or better, the placement test is waived.
    1. COMPASS Writing score 67 or below, take the appropriate developmental writing course progressing though a minimum of English Composition I. Admission to the program will be contingent on successful completion (a grade of a "C" or above) of English Composition I before admission into the second year of the program.
    2. COMPASS Reading score 77 or below: take the appropriate developmental reading course progressing though a minimum of Reading Skills II. Admission to the program will be contingent on successful completion (a grade of a "C" or above) of General Psychology before admission into the second year of the program.
    3. If using the Enhanced ACT English and Reading score, refer to the English and Reading placement schedule progressing through a minimum of writing skills IV and Reading Skills II.

CONSULTATION

  1. Applicant meets with the Financial Aid representative to discuss financial aid, and signs and submits the "Financial Aid Interview Form" to the MLT Program Coordinator.

INTERVIEW

  1. After receiving the admission forms, health record, transcripts, references, financial aid interview form, essential functions form, and after successfully completing the COMPASS or Enhance ACT (if applicable) exams, the MLT Program Coordinator will schedule an interview for the applicant with a faculty member. The applicant is notified by mail or telephone of the date and time of the appointment. A structured interview guide is provided to both faculty and prospective students and utilized for point allocation.
  2. The interview is conducted by a faculty member and the interview guide is completed.

SELECTION PROCESS

  1. The selection process occurs as follows:
    1. The data from the completed forms, transcripts, references and interview is transferred to the Admission Evaluation Tabulation form and the tabulation score is computed. The applicants are then ranked in order of their scores.
    2. The Allied Health Admission Committee meets during March and as needed to review the recommendations of the Allied Health programs. Decisions are made to admit, defer, or reject each recommendation.
    3. The applicants will be notified by mail of their acceptance, deferral, or rejection status by the middle of April.
    4. MLT applicants whose application packets are complete by March 10 will be notified by mail of their acceptance, deferral, or rejection status by the middle of April. Admission applications completed after March 10 will be considered by the Allied Health Admissions Committee as needed. These applicants will be notified by mail of their acceptance, deferral, or rejection status immediately following the next scheduled admissions meeting.

READMISSION PROCESS

  1. For students who have previously been in the MLT program and have successfully completed a portion of the curriculum requirements, readmission to the program can be sought as follows (this readmission will be subject to openings in the class to which admission is being sought)
    1. Complete the application form to the Allied Health Division.
    2. Obtain 3 references.
    3. Applicants for readmission who have not attended the MLT program within the last two years must repeat the entire program.
    4. Complete other admission requests at the discretion of the MLT program coordinator.
    5. For admission to the spring semester, the MLT program coordinator will review the applicant's past admission records and the above forms in December. A recommendation will be made regarding acceptance into the program for the following semester.
    6. The Allied Health Admission Committee will meet in December to review the recommendations of the MLT program coordinator and a decision regarding the selection will be made at this time.
    7. The applicant will be notified by mail of their acceptance, deferral, or rejection status.
